Driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants legislation has life in Senate

The legislation, which passed the Assembly last week, built up positive momentum over the weekend in the state Senate and the chamber is planning a vote by Wednesday, according to a Senate source. If approved by the state Legislature, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo is expected to sign the measure.

Heading into the weekend, Sen. Luis Sepulveda, a Bronx Democrat, was feeling encouraged by the internal discussions held among the Senate Democrats. He said it was one of his “proudest moments” as a legislator to hear his colleagues discuss the issue with “sympathy and empathy.”

The vote is politically challenging for freshman Democratic senators representing Long Island and Hudson Valley communities, who largely oppose the measure. The issue is supported by 53 percent of Democratic voters.
