FIRST IN PLAYBOOK: The New York Immigration Coalition is launching a new ad targeting Mayor Bill de Blasio for his opposition to deep cuts to the NYPD budget. The 30-second TV ad, which will run on NY1 and News 12 as well as online, charges that de Blasio has abandoned the police reform convictions he campaigned on, and calls for $1 billion in cuts to the police. “Bill de Blasio came into office promising police reform, but black communities are still being criminalized,” the ad says. “We saw brutal attacks against protesters, but de Blasio defended the police. Now he wants to cut billions in funding from affordable housing, education, summer youth and transit programs while opposing cuts to the NYPD.” The group is calling for money to be redirected to other sections of the budget, including a coronavirus relief fund for immigrants ineligible for federal aid.
