Motorists who illegally pass school buses now risk being caught on camera and ticketed.
The cameras, which are common in other states, would be operated by municipalities and revenue generated by the fines is expected to pay for the devices. Passing a school bus while the sign is deployed is illegal in all 50 states.
Surveys by the New York State Association for Pupil Transportation consistently indicate that school bus drivers see about 50,000 improper passes per day.
